Trump’s biggest campaign promises are about to face a ‘Day One’ test

Trump’s biggest campaign promises are about to face a ‘Day One’ test

WASHINGTON (AP) — As a candidate, Donald Trump made a slew of “Day One” promises that any president would find daunting.
He declared that repealing and replacing his predecessor’s health care law would be “one of his first acts as president.” He released an 18-point plan for actions that would push forward sweeping ethics reforms and potentially undo scores of regulations. And he promised to fundamentally change the nation’s approach to immigration and begin work on an impenetrable wall along the southern border — all on his first day.
Some of Trump’s proposals would be easy: They require executive action or simply announcing his intention to do something.
Others, however, require congressional approval and would likely draw numerous legal challenges.
The list is long and ambitious — and there’s no indication from the White House that the president has any intention of taking them all up on Monday.
Nonetheless, here is a list of everything Trump promised to do on “Day One” of his administration:
IMMIGRATION:
—Stop all federal funding to “sanctuary cities” — places where local officials don’t arrest or detain immigrants living in the country illegally for federal authorities.
—Begin deporting what Trump estimates to be more than 2 million criminal illegal immigrants living in the country.
—Cancel visas for citizens of foreign countries that won’t take those criminal illegal immigrants back.
—Immediately terminate former President Barack Obama’s “two illegal executive amnesties.” That presumably includes DACA, which protects people who were brought into the country illegally as children.
—Begin working on an “impenetrable physical wall” along the southern border.
—Ask Congress to pass “Kate’s Law,” which would increase penalties on people who unlawfully re-enter the United States after being removed.
SECURITY AND DEFENSE:
—Immediately suspend the Syrian refugee program.
—Convene his generals and inform them that they have 30 days to submit a new plan for defeating the Islamic State group.
—Suspend immigration from “terror-prone regions” where he says vetting is too difficult.
—Implement new “extreme” immigration vetting techniques.
TRADE:
—Announce his intention to renegotiate or withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico.
—Formally withdraw from the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership.
—Direct his treasury secretary to label China a currency manipulator.
DRAINING THE SWAMP and GOVERNMENT REFORM:
—Propose a Constitutional amendment to impose term limits on all members of Congress.
—Ban White House and congressional officials from becoming lobbyists for five years after they leave the government.
—Ban former White House officials from lobbying on behalf of foreign governments for the rest of their lives.
—Ban foreign lobbyists from raising money for U.S. elections.
—Impose a hiring freeze on federal employees, excluding military, public safety and public health staff.
—Impose a requirement that for every new federal regulation imposed, two existing regulations be eliminated.
ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT:
—Remove any Obama-era roadblocks to energy projects such as the Keystone XL pipeline.
—Lift restrictions on mining coal and drilling for oil and natural gas.
—Cancel payments to the U.N.’s climate change programs and use the money to fix America’s water and environmental infrastructure.
HEALTH CARE, GUN CONTROL AND OTHER ISSUES:
—Cancel “every unconstitutional executive action, memorandum and order issued by President Obama.”
—Ask Congress to send him a bill to repeal and replace Obama’s signature health care law.
—Begin the process of selecting a new Supreme Court justice.
—Get rid of gun-free zones in schools and on military bases.

Donald Trump inauguration: What did the new President promise to do in his inaugural address?

Donald Trump inauguration: What did the new President promise to do in his inaugural address?

Donald Trump packed a lot of promises in his 16-minute inaugural address.
From stopping radical Islamic terrorism to exploring the mysteries of space, here are all the things the new President promised to do in his speech:

Stop the 'American carnage'

The speech began on a darker note, as Mr Trump spoke of an America where politicians prospered, jobs disappeared and factories rusted-out.
Law and order was a central theme of Mr Trump's election campaign, and he wasted no time reminding Americans how he would tackle the issue.
"The crime and the gangs and the drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealised potential. This American carnage stops right here and stops right now."

Bring back lots of things

"We will bring back our jobs, we will bring back our borders, we will bring back our wealth, and we will bring back our dream."

Make everything 'America first'

During the transition, Mr Trump made a habit of calling out companies that sent jobs out of America, and praised those who announced they would keep jobs within US borders.
In his inaugural address, the new President said a "new vision" would now govern America.
Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs will be made to benefit American workers and American families. We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies and destroying our jobs."

Build a whole lot of infrastructure

States hit the hardest in the global financial crisis were where Mr Trump found his core base of supporters.
As the ABC's Washington bureau chief Zoe Daniel reported last year, a billionaire businessman promising to bring back jobs and factories was an attractive proposition to many voters.
Mr Trump made sure to remind everyone of that promise.
"We will build new roads and highways and bridges and airports and tunnels and railways all across our wonderful nation. We will get our people off welfare and back to work, rebuilding our country with American hands and American labour."

Make new friends and end terrorism

We've already got an idea of who the new President might be making friends with after he suggested he would ease sanctions on Russia imposed by the Obama administration.
Things are a little less clear when it comes to China. Mr Trump withheld support for the "one-China" policy during the transition process, prompting China's foreign ministry to urge him to recognise the sensitivity of the issue.
"We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones and unite the civilised world against radical Islamic terrorism which we will eradicate completely from the face of the Earth."

Say so long to disease and hello to space

"We stand at the birth of a little millennium ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the Earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow."

Make America lots of things … including great again

You didn't think Mr Trump was going to make it through his address without delivering his famous campaign slogan, did you?
He took plenty of time winding up to it, but Mr Trump's supporters in the crowd loved hearing the line to close out the speech.
"Together we will make America strong again, we will make America wealthy again, we will make America proud again, we will make America safe again and, yes, together, we will make America great again. Thank you! God bless you! And God bless America!"

Facebook blocks Russia Today from posting so it can't stream Donald Trump inauguration, state broadcaster claims

Facebook blocks Russia Today from posting so it can't stream Donald Trump inauguration, state broadcaster claims

The dispute apparently arose because the page livestreamed Barack Obama's final press conference.

Russian state broadcaster Russia Today has been banned from Facebook so that it can't cover the Donald Trump inauguration, it has claimed.
The site can't post any media or links onto its page until the ceremony is over and Mr Trump becomes president, it has claimed.
Its ban is temporary and will be lifted on Saturday evening, and it says that it is working to get it lifted sooner. But if that doesn't happen it won't be able to cover any of Donald Trump's inauguration, which takes place on Friday.
RT said that the ban had happened because the page live-streamed Obama's final press conference. "Such things happen because (for ex.) some other news media livestreams carry the same shots and feed, and Facebook considers this a copyright violation," it wrote on its page, where it can still post text but no images, videos or links.
But the video appeared to come from the White House, which makes its video available copyright free. As such, it isn't clear who the complaint came from or when it was made.
In response to comments under that post it said that it was "NOT going anywhere, so tune in & question more" and that it was "proud to have such a great audience".
Relations between Russia and the US have become strained in recent weeks after the latter's intelligence agencies accused Russian agents of interfering with the US election to help Mr Trump be elected.

Nigeria Will Break Into Two If Buhari Dares Interrupting Our Rally On Friday – IPOB

Nigeria Will Break Into Two If Buhari Dares Interrupting Our Rally On Friday – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned that, “heaven will fall” should President Muhammadu Buhari order soldiers to interrupt its Friday’s rally in solidarity of the United States, President-elect, Donald Trump.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group explained that the rally was aimed at making the world understand how “resolute and committed we are towards the emancipation, realisation and proclamation of our God given right to live as free men and women in our ancestral land of Biafra.”   Noting that should security operatives attack its members during the rally, “the non violent position of our great movement will be revoked with immediate effect. Our only interest is to exercise our right to peaceful protest and lawful assembly as recognised in law.” The pro-Biafra group also called on Ndigbos to use all means possible to stop the Buhari-backed Fulani herdsmen from killing Christians in the South East. IPOB said the Buhari-backed Fulani herdsmen are using the immunity allegedly provided by the President to further their Islamisation agenda in the South East.

The statement reads, “The indigenous people of Biafra IPOB worldwide and its leadership are calling on all IPOB family members and Biafrans from all over West Africa, Nigeria and Biafraland to be at Rivers State for the long awaited peaceful IPOB-TRUMP SOLIDARITY RALLY on Friday 20th January 2017. Venue is Port-Harcourt River State. “We are going to ask Sovereign Lord God Almighty Chukwu Okike Abiama, for Trump’s successful take over on that day and for the release of our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others detained illegally on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari in all the DSS secret cells and prisons across Nigeria. “This IPOB peaceful rally on 20th January 2017 will be for Biafrans, friends of Biafra and lovers of freedom all over the world to understand how resolute and committed we are towards the emancipation, realisation and proclamation of our God given right to live as free men and women in our ancestral land of Biafra.

We Biafrans abhor slavery and subjugation of human beings in whatever form or guise. “Therefore, the deadly march of Islamisation through Biafraland, using the cover of Fulani herdsmen, with presidential immunity from prosecution and license to kill unarmed Christian populations at will, MUST be stopped by every means necessary. “This IPOB peaceful rally for Trump in Igweocha on Friday the 20th of January 2017 will feature the pictures of our able leader and prophet of our time Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the pictures of those detained illegally alongside him and those of President Donald Trump. “As usual we shall maintain strict discipline of nonviolence and non-engagement with enemy combatants the Nigerian Army and Police. However we must reiterate that should President Buhari ordered his soldiers to fire at IPOB peaceful protesters, heaven will fall. “The non-violent position of our great movement will be revoked with immediate effect. Our only interest is to exercise our right to peaceful protest and lawful assembly as recognised in law. “Should any trigger happy army or police personnel fire at our members, the world should hold Buhari responsible for any outcome.

Gov. Nyesom Wike is also hereby reminded of his responsibility to protect the lives of those on peaceful rally. “He should not allow himself to be used by Northern elements within the security apparatus in Igweocha to kill our people. We have not forgiven him for his past actions, so he must be careful not to allow a breakdown of law and order on the 20th as a result of any provocative behaviour by the Hausa Fulani Islamic Nigerian Army. “Peaceful rallies and marches are recognised in law all over the world so we can’t stop exercising this right now because of intimidation and brutality. “Every IPOB local media team are advised to be at Igweocha to provide live video and audio feed for live simulcasting on Biafra Television, Radio Biafra and Facebook. We want to capture every moment of the rally because the whole world will be watching. “In anticipation of mobile network disruptions as they did during the last two court appearance in Abuja, head of media will provide free satellite wi-fi feed for all those intent of broadcasting live. We must be prepared with all our gadgets and recording equipments. “IPOB appreciates the wise counsel and support of our friends from all over the world. Freedom is not negotiable because right to self-determination is inalienable.

‘Stay strong, January is fast approaching’, Trump tells Israel

‘Stay strong, January is fast approaching’, Trump tells Israel

Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, asked Israel to stay strong, saying his inauguration on Jan. 20, 2017, is fast approaching and things will change.
Trump’s remark was not unconnected with the continued controversies over recent UN resolution condemning Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories.
“We cannot continue to let Israel be treated with such total disdain and disrespect.
“They used to have a great friend in the U.S., but not anymore.
“The beginning of the end was the horrible Iran deal, and now this (U.N.)!
“Stay strong Israel, January 20th is fast approaching!” the president-elect said.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has had a tense relationship with Obama, particularly over the abstention, responded to Trump on Twitter, thanking the incoming U.S. president.
“President-elect Trump, thank you for your warm friendship and your clear-cut support for Israel!” Netanyahu responded to Trump.
Earlier, the incoming president had also given an impression that the transition process between him and Obama’s administration was not going smoothly.
According to him, there have also been “many inflammatory statements” and “roadblocks” from Obama.
“Doing my best to disregard the many inflammatory President O statements and roadblocks.
“Thought it was going to be a smooth transition – NOT!” Trump had tweeted.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had in his remarks on Wednesday, defended U.S. abstention rather than veto the UN Security Council resolution on the Israeli settlements in Palestinian.
Kerry also warned Israel that the two-state solution to the crisis rocking the Middle East was in jeopardy.
Trump had on Monday, criticised the UN after the resolution, describing the global body as a mere talk club.
“The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time.
“So sad,” Trump said.
The presiden-elect had earlier asked the U.S. to veto the resolution.
“The resolution being considered at the United Nations Security Council regarding Israel should be vetoed.
“As the United States has long maintained, peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians will only come through direct negotiations between the parties, and not through the imposition of terms by the United Nations.
“This puts Israel in a very poor negotiating position and is extremely unfair to all Israelis.”
However, the resolution was put forward on Friday by Malaysia, New Zealand, Senegal and Venezuela after Egypt, who earlier sponsored it asked for its suspension.
The Obama administration disregarded Trump’s directive and went ahead to abstain from voting on the resolution when it finally came up on Friday, drawing criticisms from the president-elect and his team.
The 15-member Council adopted the resolution by a vote of 14 in favour, while the U.S abstained.
Trump had, thereafter, threatened that “things will change” at the global international organisation when he assumesthe U.S. presidency from Jan. 20, 2017.
The White House had, in a response by Obama’s Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications, Mr Ben Rhodes, cautioned Trump’s and his team, saying Obama remains president till Jan. 20, 2017.
“On the President-elect, the first thing I’d just say is that there’s one President at a time.
“President Obama is the President of the United States until January 20th, and we are taking this action (abstention), of course, as U.S. policy,” he said.
